Where Every Major Character Stands After Episode 2
Rhaenyra is on the Iron Throne — for now. She has King’s Landing, she has executed Otto Hightower and Jasper Wylde, and she has shattered the alliance with Alicent that delivered the city. Her reign begins with blood on the floor and a friend who has reason to become an enemy. Episode 3 needs to show what governing actually looks like for a queen who took the throne in grief.
Alicent is in the Red Keep, having watched her father executed. Her cooperation with Rhaenyra — the thing that made “Queen’s Landing” possible — is likely over in any functional sense. Episode 3 needs to establish what Alicent becomes now: a hostage, a reluctant neutral, an active opponent operating from within the walls, or something more complicated.

How does Aemond react when he learns King’s Landing has fallen? This is the episode’s most anticipated scene. Aemond left to hunt Daemon. He left his mother to manage a city he expected to return to. He comes back from that mission — or from Harrenhal — to discover Rhaenyra is on the throne, his city is gone, and his mother opened the gates. What Ewan Mitchell does with that scene may be the best acting moment of the season.
What does Alicent do now? She cannot leave the Red Keep easily — she is in Rhaenyra’s city. She cannot credibly collaborate with a queen who executed her father. The space between those two positions — unable to leave, unable to cooperate — is where Alicent’s remaining Season 3 arc lives. Episode 3 needs to establish what it looks like.
Who rides Sheepstealer? Rhaena is in the Vale with the dragon, in exile, the bond incomplete. Daemon mentioned to Rhaenyra a mysterious dragon with an unidentified rider seen flying for the Greens. Whether Sheepstealer ends up claimed by an unexpected rider — or whether Rhaena finally completes the bond — is one of the season’s most significant open threads.
Does Criston Cole get the news at Rook’s Rest? Aegon is heading toward Cole. Before he arrives, Cole presumably receives the raven confirming King’s Landing has fallen. The Green faction’s primary military commander responding to the fall of the capital — and to Aegon’s imminent arrival on the run — is a critical Episode 3 thread.
What does Daemon do about Hugh and Ulf? Two dragonseed riders have abandoned their post. Two men with dragons are now unaccounted for and operating outside Rhaenyra’s command. The dragonseed betrayal at Second Tumbleton is where those threads eventually lead. Episode 3 begins the process of establishing how that betrayal becomes possible.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 3 is also where the Riverlands campaign needs to develop beyond setup. The Fishfeed and the Butcher’s Ball — the two major Black faction ground victories that destroy the advancing Hightower army — are expected in the mid-season episodes.
Daemon left the Riverlands garrison at the end of Episode 2, having heard about Jace’s death and returned to Dragonstone. The Winter Wolves, Oscar Tully, and the assembled Riverlands forces are still in the field. The Hightower army under Ormund Hightower — marching from the south with Daeron Targaryen and Tessarion — is still approaching.
King’s Landing falling does not stop that southern army. Ormund does not know yet. When he finds out — and when the army that was marching to relieve King’s Landing discovers there is no King’s Landing to relieve — the Riverlands campaign’s dynamics shift completely.
